Chromosomes are long, stringy aggregates of genes that carry heredity information. Gender is determined by the presence or absence of certain chromosomes.
Law of Segregation
The principles that govern heredity were discovered by a monk named Gregor Mendel in the 1860's. One of these principles is now called Mendel's law of segregation.
Independent Assortment
This principle of heredity formulated by Gregor Mendel states that traits are transmitted to offspring independently of one another.
Incomplete dominance:
A form of intermediate inheritance in which heterozygous alleles are both expressed, resulting in a combined phenotype. See below example
| |
1) Notice that the offspring is showing a 3rd phenotype. The parents each have one, and the offspring are different from the parents.
2) Notice that the trait in the offspring is a blend (mixing) of the parental traits.
Co-Dominance:
A hybrid organism shows a third phenotype --- not the usual "dominant" one & not the "recessive" one ... but a third, different phenotype. With incomplete dominance we get a blending of the dominant & recessive traits so that the third phenotype is something in the middle (red x white = pink).
In Co-dominance, the "recessive" & "dominant" traits appear together in the phenotype of hybrid organisms.
When it comes to punnett squares & symbols, it's the same as incomplete dominance. Use capital letters for the allele symbols. My example cross from above would look like so: R = allele for red flowers | |
In class we have seen some examples can also use markers (I) and have a superscript to show the different trait as in human blood type AB, in which two types of protein ("A" & "B") appear together on the surface of blood cells..
A very very very very very common phenotype used in questions about co-dominance is roan fur in cattle. Like the one found in our hand out pakages from class.
Cattle can be red (RR = all red hairs), white (WW = all white hairs), or roan (RW = red & white hairs together). A good example of codominance.
Another example of codominance is
b) What percent of kittens would have tan fur if a tabby cat is crossed with a black cat?
The concepts presented here do not make Mendel's concept less meaningful in any way. They are simply information that has been discovered & added to his ingenious work, making this ball of gathered string and twine we call science just a wee bit bigger, ...and more colorful!

Thanks for the extra special class today Mr. Smith. I bet you didn't know that it really was my birthday...
At least there was no singing. :)
Mr Smith your daughter is absolutely ADORABLE! Thanks for bringing her in! Also, on behalf of the class we would like to thank you and your wife for the cake!
Happy Birthday Melanie~

Hi Mr Smith. Me and Jacklyn were working on our projects and we had a couple questions. We dont really understand the difference between effects on the body and symptoms. Many of the symptoms for the Zellweger Syndrome are also effects on the body such as seizures, enlarged liver and facial deformities. We just wanted a little clarification! Thanks
Melanie you did have to sing! Remember it was happy birthday to me..hahahah.
Tasha you are more than welcome, for the cake everyone needs to feel special, and you all deserve it. Thanks for the compliment about Tarryn as well, I think she had a blast seeing everyone.
Lindsay yes for Zellweger Syndrome they often present the symptoms and effects as one and the same. Try to state which is a symptom, enlarged liver, and the effect on the body with an enlarged liver would be....
I hope that helps, if not I will do my best on Tuesday to clarify it a little more. SO please bring in the info for that part so we can go over it if you still need to.
Happy Easter everyone!
Mr. Smith
I'm not sure if you'll get this but...
Do you consider Wikipedia and invalid source?
Thanks and happy easter!
Mr smith,
i ahve one question about my culminating project.
Its about the defective prtein. For diabetes, ae the islet cells considered proteins, becasue they are what create the insulin?
never ind mr. Smith
i found it
oh man.
Yes Kyla stay far far away from Wikipedia! There are many more reliable sources out there that are accredited!
Good detective work James, also you might want to see if your keyboard is missing a few letters as your words are not coming through 100% on the blog?
Hey Mr. Smith!
Tanya and I are working on our cluminating, and we wanted to know what the difference is between 4 a and 4b. We know that Lindsay asked this too, but I think your answer was about 4b and 4c.
We just want to know what the difference would be between the effects on the body and the symptoms.
Thank you!
Mr. Smith, for me and Jacklyn's project, we cannot find a diagram for the peroxisomal membrane protein 3 (PXMP3), which is the affected protein. On the marking sheet it says that it is worth three marks, and we dont want to loose these marks, so what do you suggest?
mr smith,
on the rubric that you gave us for the paper format it says that you want a bibliography. Now do you want that in APA formating or was APA only for the citations/references in the body of our paper?
Hey Mr. Smith! How would you suggest bringing in the PPoint Presentation to class? Can we e-mail the project to ourselves and access it from there? Or would you rather us get one of those memory sticks and hand that in instead?
Hey Mr.Smith!
Hope you had a great Easter! But, Robyn and I have a question about our culminating! For the Punnett Square for Turner's Syndrome...how would you demonstrate the effects, because a women who has Turner's Syndrome cannot reproduce. Therefore, there is no offspring? We don't understand how this could be inheritated?
Thank you:)
Tonya & Robyn
Boleska, I am pretty sure that he wants the Bibiliography in APA formatting too.
Melaine, i think he wants it on a memory stick or something, because he is collecting them on Wednesday, everyones, not just the ones presenting that day, as to make sure that everyone has completed it, and are not working on it more at home after Wednesday.
Tonya, I did the Zellweger Syndrome, and its kind of the same because it only affects infants, and they almost all die, so how can they reproduce? If two carriers come together(so they arent affected by the syndrome, they just carry the gene) it is possible. They will have to be heterozygous as well. Then after completing your punnett square you can see, it is possible to then have a child affected with the syndrome. So, the offspring is coming from two carriers of the syndrome.
hey mr.smith
i hope you are enjoying your break because i am sure not. I've had the stomach flu for the past 3 days. Anyways, i would like to know, for multiple sclerosis, when you say describe the function of the protien should i be describing the myelin sheath? I am a little confused and a little behind so if you could answer as quick as possible it would be greatly appreciated
thank you
Lindsay, you may have to come up with the drawing between you and Jakie, in terms of make one up yourself to give the class the best concept of what is happening with the proteins. Also Thank you for answer your classmates questions. However, you do give them a little too much help as they need to work some of those finer details out for themselves as it is their marks they are attempting to earn.
Jake, sorry to hear about the flu. AS for the description of the protein, the myelin sheath is the problem, however, how does it get created, errors in the codes and so forth so you are on the right track.
Hi...Does anyone know if it is absolutely necessary that we have a musical track in the slideshow? I would prefer not to have one, but I don't want to lose any marks.
It doesn't specify on the rubric but I remember Mr. Smith saying something about keeping the volume low so as to not drown oneself out.
Mr Smith
i belive you make have answered this multiple times but just to make sure for our summary/hand out does it have to be one page single-sided or can it be one page double-sided?
Thanks :)
kyla.... it just has to be one piece of paper...it can be one sided or two sided it doesn’t matter just as long as it is one page...
Also mr.smith, if we found something we would like to use but do not want to change the wording of it, is it alright if we just use quotations to cite this because it is very hard to change the medical wording?
Sorry I wasn't there today in class Mr.Smith, i got a really bad concussion yesterday as my horse reared and smacked the back of my head when he did so. Did we draw the names today of who is going when? or are we doing that tomorrow at the beginning of class? or do we draw names as we go threw the presentations? Can anyone else be so kind as to fill me in on what i missed today that would be great!
thanks
t
Tashab: We haven't drawn names yet, so I'm assuming that will take place tomorrow.
Mr. Smith said he wouldn't be able to check the blog tonight, but I can't see why you couldn't use quotations, as long as you cited it properly in the APA format.
This is probably *NOT* the place to ask...but Jake, I was wondering what exactly were the symptoms that you had while you were sick on the long weekend? It sure was a good thing that I presented on Wednesday, because I'm extremely sick at the moment...
Mr Smith,
I was doing my pedigree assignment and tracing back left handed and right handed...what do I put if someone in the family is abedextoris??
Mr Smith,
For the pedigree assignment is says you we are to use names...by names do you mean, "aunt", "uncle", "mom", "dad"....or names like, "Bob", Sally", "jane" etc. what do you mean by this?
http://www.smartdraw.com/specials/ecomap.htm?type=45444&id=45444
I am technologically challenged and so if you are too. This is a free download so that you can create the pedigree chart reasonably easier than you might have otherwise. I hope this may help someone, if not, it was worth a try.
katie
He said he would like the assignment to be in landscape form. He also said you could name the individuals as you please...such as 'Grandpa' or 'Susie.' Name them as you would call them :)
Is this assignment due on Monday or on Tuesday?
